Spotted Conus Shell
There are certainly many types of cone shell ( we estimate at least 500 species of cone shells ) and these are fine examples from the Condidae family measuring at least 6 cms long. There is such a wide variety of colour patterns and this has made them firm favourites with shell lovers and collectors the world over. Paintings from voyagers and discovers in the 16th century when discovering the New World sometimes feature these seashells. Cone shells are quite heavy and strong and there is an absence of “teeth” in the Conidae family. In their live form some cone shells can inject a virulent poison! Exceptionally these can grow as large as 15 cms! Their range is Indo Pacific in the areas of the Phillipines and Indonesia.
